Real-Time Support on IEEE 802.11 Wireless Ad-Hoc Networks: Reality vs. Theory

چکیده
The usable throughput of an IEEE 802.11 system for an application is much less than the raw bandwidth. Although 802.11b has a theoretical maximum of 11 Mbps, more than half of the bandwidth is consumed by overhead leaving at most 5 Mbps of usable bandwidth. Considering this characteristic, this paper proposes and analyzes a real-time distributed scheduling scheme based on the existing IEEE 802.11 wireless ad-hoc networks, using USC/ISI’s Power Aware Sensing Tracking and Analysis (PASTA) hardware platform. We compared the distributed realtime scheduling scheme with the real-time polling scheme to meet deadline, and compared a measured real bandwidth with a theoretical result. The theoretical and experimental results show that the distributed scheduling scheme can guarantee real-time traffic and enhances the performance up to 74% compared with polling scheme. key words: ad-hoc networks, real-time scheduling scheme, real bandwidth, Wi-Fi, IEEE 802.11 MAC

A Hidden Node Aware Network Allocation Vector Management System for Multi-hop Wireless Ad hoc Networks
Many performance evaluations for IEEE 802.11distributed coordination function (DCF) have been previouslyreported in the literature. Some of them have clearly indicatedthat 802.11 MAC protocol has poor performance in multi-hopwireless ad hoc networks due to exposed and hidden nodeproblems. Although RTS/CTS transmission scheme mitigatesthese phenomena, it has not been successful in thoroughlyomit...
متن کاملInfrastructure-Based MAC in Wireless Mobile Ad-Hoc Networks
The IEEE 802.11 standard is the most popular Medium Access Control (MAC) protocol for wireless local area networks. However, in an ad-hoc environment, the Point Coordination Function (PCF), defined in the standard, cannot be readily used. This is due to the fact that there is no central authority to act as a Point Coordinator (PC). Peer-to-peer ad-hoc mode in the IEEE 802.11 standard only imple...
متن کاملReal-Time Communication in IEEE 802.11 Mobile Ad hoc Networks A Feasibility Study
Achieving predictable communication latency in an ad hoc IEEE 802.11 wireless local area network necessitates an approach that overcomes the impact of the underlying non-deterministic contention-based medium access control (MAC) protocol. In this paper, we assess the feasibility of using a Time Division Multiple Access (TDMA) layer above the IEEE 802.11 MAC protocol in order to achieve such pre...
متن کاملDoes the IEEE 802.11 MAC Protocol Work Well in Multihop Wireless Ad Hoc Networks?
The IEEE 802.11 MAC protocol is the standard for wireless LANs; it is widely used in testbeds and simulations for wireless multihop ad hoc networks. However, this protocol was not designed for multihop networks. Although it can support some ad hoc network architecture, it is not intended to support the wireless mobile ad hoc network, in which multihop connectivity is one of the most prominent f...
